Exclusive Preview: “Christmas in Christ Chapel 2014: Starry Rose, Tender Night”

SAINT PETER— At the end of months of dedicated preparation, thousands of members of the Gustavus community are soon to return to campus to attend the 42nd Christmas in Christ Chapel. This year’s theme, “Starry Rose, Tender Night,” was developed after a brainstorm session to identify four words which describe a birth without identifying how icky the human birthing process is. To embrace all that is #CinCC, The Fourth Crown has assembled this guide through many of the concert service’s most thrilling new features, as well as the community’s old favorites.

This year's #CinCC program cover artwork features a chicken tender, Derek Rose, the Starbucks logo, and Freddy Krueger from "A Nightmare on Elm Street" to represent the theme of "Tender Rose, Starry Night."

OLD FAVORITE: PRE-SERVICE BUFFET

This traditional Swedish buffet served before each evening performance embodies this year’s theme by consisting solely of a giant trough of McDonalds Chicken Tenders. McChristmas: I’m Loving It.

NEW FEATURE: LIVESTREAMING

For the first time in C in CC history, the Saturday night performance will be livestreamed to dozens of viewers across the country.

OLD FAVORITE: IGNORING FINALS FOR ANOTHER WEEK

Perhaps the most appreciated of all C in CC traditions is the chance for hundreds of students to completely forget that a barrage of final exams is waiting right around the corner. Enabling students to focus on a birthday rather than passing General Physics and getting into med school is one of Christ’s most understated, but most amazing, miracles.

NEW FEATURE: CHRISTMAS

New to C in CC this year is a nod to the holiday referred to as Christmas, which celebrates the birth of the Christian savior in a lowly manger outside of the ancient city of Bethlehem to a poor, virgin mother. This story will be interwoven with the traditional themes of uncomfortable seating and rave lighting as well as this year’s themes of floral arrangements and space travel.

OLD FAVORITE: SWEATERS

This year’s performance will be sure to embrace the classic C in CC tradition of an audience clad in more wool than an insomniac knitter’s sheep-counting sessions.

NEW FEATURE: PURSE & WALLET CHECK

To help alumni donate back to the college in an efficient manner, fundraising administrators are offering a purse and wallet check service at the doors of Christ Chapel. Simply hand your item to an attendee at the door upon entry. After the show and your generous donation of your line of credit, checking balance, and automobile, bypass parking lot traffic by boarding one of several school busses waiting for you at Three Flags plaza.

OLD FAVORITE: O COME, ALL YE FAITHFUL

Nothing brings back a flood of memories quite like Gustavus’ signature arrangement of this classic hymn. Tears flow freely as alumni new and old think back to their time on those risers, singing and playing alongside lifelong connections, friends, and spouses. Parents and grandparents of current performers beam with pride at this culmination of decades of practice and passion, and appreciation for all their loved one has accomplished and has yet to do. For the more pious attendee, this declaration of the triumphant miracle of Christ’s birth magnifies the beauty of his message and the tragedy of his sacrifice. For the rest of us, it means the service is finally over, with enough time in the night to hit a few parties before bed.
