SAINT PETER, MN— Last Friday at The Dive, Minneapolis based boy band Yam Haus gave one of the most memorable performances in Gustavus Adolphus College history. Their hour-long setlist filled with bops both original and covers left the entire crowd absolutely and positively Yammed. Students went wild during their hit song “West Coast” and began chanting “YAM, YAM, YAM, YAM” over and over again in a perfect monotone. A hundred voices became one, booming and haunting. They did not stop chanting with the summer pop inspired guitar riffs. “YAM, YAM, YAM.”
The lights turned red, a splendid touch to the atmosphere as the band went into a cover of Jon Bellion’s “Human,” and the crowd went wild. Gustavus students then took the yam’s given to them upon entrance and began smashing them in their hands until they were all left with an orange paste. That is when the concert went from being 3OH!3 quality to amazing. Yam Haus led the students like Pied Piper’s through the halls of the Jackson Student Union and Campus Center in a truly unholy march. “Y A M, Y A M, Y A M,” they chanted, smearing their yam paste on their fellow students and inducting their peers into that unholy march.
Not long after, the entire student body marched after Yam Haus and regrouped back in The Dive. Yam Haus then concluded their set with a song that not a soul could hear over the continued chants of “̶͇͍̀̀͆̌̓͘̕Ỷ̴̢̢̠̙̪̒̾͘͜ ̸̬͓̺̳̽̈́͒̓̒A̷͚̕ ̴͎̮͎̜̓̋̋̒Ṁ̸̟̍͜,̷̧̖͈̜̠̖̂̏ ̶̛̼͉̆̇̊̕Y̴͎̟̓͘͝͠ ̴̖͉̻͉͈̑̔͂͊̅A̷̧̧̮̜̰̿̄͘ͅ ̶̡̳̻͛͌́̏̆M̷̡̥̺̞̽,̵̢̭̦͌̽̓̾ ̵̡̜̳̺͌̃̾̊͝Y̴̛͙̩̜̳̫͖͋̿͛̐ ̸̞̼̏Ǎ̶̱̣̪́ ̷̲̾Ṃ̵̀ͅ.̶̹̫̀̂̀”̴̦̘̲͚̦̙̈́ ̵̤̪̩͈̬̖̱̎̿̂ The band members then thanked Gustavus for hosting them before they ascended into Yam Paradise with the promise to return again. President Becky Bergman, covered in yam herself, confirmed that the halls of Gustavus will return to the pure yam state. Students wait eagerly, sweet potatoes of all kinds in hand.
